Bio-based Packaging

Objective: To develop fully bio-based and biodegradable films and trays suitable for modern food packaging applications.
Description: This work package focuses on developing sustainable packaging materials that can replace conventional plastics. Bio-based films and trays are designed to meet key packaging needs such as strength, sealing, and protection of fresh food. The materials are carefully tested to ensure good performance in both vacuum and modified atmosphere packaging, while remaining environmentally friendly.

Smart Phage-Based Antimicrobial Delivery System

Contributors: Associação do Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lodz
Objective: To develop a smart antimicrobial system that releases bacteriophages only when harmful bacteria are present.
Description: WP2 designs an innovative, nature-inspired solution that allows antimicrobial protection to activate only when needed. This approach supports food safety while avoiding unnecessary interventions. The system is designed to be safe for consumers and compatible with biodegradable packaging materials.

Validation of the Smart Antimicrobial
System

Objective: To confirm that the smart antimicrobial system works effectively under conditions relevant to food storage.
Description: This work package evaluates how efficiently and sensitively the antimicrobial system responds to contamination. Testing is carried out under realistic conditions to ensure that the system activates reliably and contributes to safer food and reduced waste.
